I myself have yet to take on a project so big as to need outside funding. But one of the ways I know to do so is the Staged Reading. This is quite conventional so I apologize if it's something you've already considered.
Assemble your actors, rehearse, find a simple stage and invite your potential Money-Men. Do a non-stop reading, without any or only limited blocking, usually sitting. And videotape it.
If your thinking of grants, I have a book:
MONEY FOR FILM & VIDEO ARTISITS
I've only skimmed through it so far. But usually to get a grant, your project must have a positive theme in dealing with the humanities. Nature, social issues, etc. There may be exceptions, but this is what I've heard. I find this somewhat of an obstacle, not that I'm against the humanities. If someone knows otherwise, please speak up.
Also. Cash, if you want me to look up something specific in the book I'd be happy to. Just ask.

I just realized you're in England. The book may be of no help. Sorry.
